History
New Thresholds, a domestic violence intervention program, was originally organized through a collaboration of community agencies and concerned citizens in 1977. The program was funded by grants that were made available through Waukesha County Technical College. The administration of the New Thresholds and People to People programs were transferred to Family Service of Waukesha in 1993.

Program Goal
The goal of the program is to protect individuals and families from physical injury and emotional abuse, and to break the cycle of violence with people who are abusive in their relationships.

Services
New Thresholds is a twenty-week group program for perpetrators of family violence. The New Thresholds program helps to protect victims from abuse by teaching abusers acceptable ways of handling frustration and anger. The dynamics of violence, power and control issues, relationship issues, understanding and controlling anger, communication skills, parent/child interaction, drugs and alcohol, and instruction for improving relationships are addressed.

New Directions is a twelve-week group program that assists participants in setting manageable boundaries around their anger. The group is for people who have acted out inappropriately toward a co-worker, police, strangers, property, road rage, etc.

New Horizons is a twenty-week group program for women who are using abusive or violent behavior as a means of resolving conflict. Many abusive women are the victims of previous abuse. Participants learn the dynamics of violence, and also learn alternative methods of dealing with frustration and anger.

Referral sources
Most of the participants in our programs are required to attend because they were convicted as being a perpetrator of a domestic or civil crime, and have a court order, and/or an order from the Department of Probation and Parole to attend one of our programs as a condition of probation. Self referrals are also appropriate and are encouraged.
